Web site to bookmark: “Raising Kids on a Shoestring”

When the team at Feminists for Life planned an update to its resource guide, “Raising Kids on a Shoestring,” the expectation was that another magazine-style print edition would be adequate. It wasn’t. The range of information and assistance available to pregnant and parenting individuals has grown so much that print doesn’t do it justice. Instead, FFL now has a separate web site full of “free and frugal resources, smart and creative solutions, and practical support”: kidsonashoestring.com.

I haven’t explored it fully, but anything that affirms life AND helps overcome the feeling of helplessness that accompanies a crisis pregnancy is OK with me. The PDF embedded below is from kidsonashoestring.com, and Feminists for Life hopes that lots of people will share it. I’m just doing my part here.

She Said It: Wangari Maathai

“There is no reason why anybody who has been conceived, shouldn’t be given the opportunity to be born and to live a happy life. The fact that a life like that is terminated, is wrong. When we allow abortion, we are punishing the women…. and we are punishing the children whose life is terminated…. I want us to step back a little bit and say: Why is this woman and this child threatened? Why is this woman threatening to terminate this life? What do we need to do as a society? What are we not doing right now as a society?”

~~~ Wangari Maathai, Winner of the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize, as quoted in feministsforlife.org
Do you have an adoption story to share?
logo hi resNovember is Adoption Awareness Month, and of course we ought to be mindful of adoption every month. I’d like to hear from my readers about your own adoption stories. If you are an adopted child, an adoptive parent, or a birthparent who chose adoption for her child, and if you’d like to share your story, I’d love to hear from you. We all have things to learn from each other. Email me at ellen@leavenfortheloaf.com and we can have a conversation, or if you’d prefer, just send your adoption story – happy, sad, in-progress, whatever – and I’ll share it with gratitude and awe. Many thanks.
If you missed this wonderful post a year ago from Catherine Adair about her own family’s journey in adoption, treat yourself to it now. She kindly gave me permission to re-blog the story that she originally posted at her blog The Harvest is Abundant.
Feminists for Life has an ad that’s particularly apt this month. Check this link, and imagine this in your local college’s newspaper.
Serrin Foster of Feminists for Life: “The Feminist Case Against Abortion”
This is a recording of Feminists for Life president Serrin Foster speaking to a group of college students in 2001 (video from Vimeo, posted by The Veritas Forum). Her topic: The Feminist Case Against Abortion. Today, over a decade later, Foster continues to speak nationwide for FFL. She’ll be at Yale University this Saturday, September 20, 2014. Hearing her in person undoubtedly beats watching a video, but her thoughtful ideas are worth sharing either way.
